- Salesforce to allow remote or flexible work for most employees, with big implications for S.F.
RT @michaelbolden: Salesforce, one of San Francisco’s biggest office tenants, plans to allow permanent remote work for most employees. Most staff may be in the office 1 to 3 days per week. What will this mean for the city and the Bay Area?

RT @jameshamblin: If this were a scientific process, having the same group vote as a grand jury and then subsequently be expected to serve as an impartial jury would be a textbook definition of confirmation bias. (It’s almost impossible to say "this trial shouldn’t happen" and then "he’s guilty.")

RT @RepJayapal: A $15 minimum wage means a raise for 27 million workers. It means one million Americans will be lifted out of poverty. I’m proud to have secured a $15 minimum wage in the House’s COVID bill — now we need to get it across the finish line.

- Arianna Rosenbluth Dies at 93; Pioneering Figure in Data Science
The Metropolis algorithm, a technique for generating random samplings, started out as a way to understand a fundamental problem: how atoms rearrange themselves as solids melt. Over the decades, the Metropolis algorithm and its subsequent variations have been put to a vast number of uses and now serve as an underpinning to understanding critical challenges of our age, including making sense of huge volumes of data, predicting election outcomes and understanding Covid-19’s spread. A physicist who played an important role in developing that algorithm and thus shaping the science of simulation, Arianna Wright Rosenbluth, died on Dec. 28 at a nursing home in Pasadena, Calif. She was 93. The cause was complications of Covid-19, her daughter Jean Rosenbluth said. Despite her extraordinary work and despite earning her Ph.D. from Harvard at 21, Dr. Rosenbluth left the field in her mid-20s and rarely talked about her scientific achievement afterward.
